Tonga is famous for the Humpback Whales that migrate through Tonga for 4 months every year from July - October. Vava’u is the best location to go to see whales as this is where they come in closest to shore. You will find yourself up close and personal with one of the most majestic creatures on the planet, the Humpback Whale. You can either watch from the boat, or jump in the water with a snorkel.
The main town in the Vava’u group is Neiafu, which is a quaint seaside town that is very quiet for most of the year, and comes to life during the whale season. Shops, restaurants and banks can be found here.
The diving in Vava’u is excellent, with coral reefs the main attraction as well as a large wreck called the Clan McWilliam. This wreck sits upright in 23-37m of water and is best dived when the visibility is high. There are around 50 dive sites in Vava’u, and many new wrecks continue to be discovered.
