Sitting 13 km of the coast of Maketu Plate Island has a lot to offer, being so far offshore it has fantastic clear water similar to what you would expect from Mayor Island. 

Plate island is diverse in marine species which will only flourish now this island is a  marine protected area.  You will find crayfish, conger eels and moray eels hiding under big boulders stacked on top of one another. Closer in towards the island Kingis can be seen  circling the drop off towards the deeper areas of the site chasing schools of smaller fish.
